As a new facilitator of a Life Group, what do you think is the main focus of what you'll be doing? In Colossians 3:17 and 24, it says "Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.... Keep in mind always that the ultimate Master you're serving is Christ." In a "me" centered society, these are hard words to hear, aren't they? Most of what culture dictates to us is a philosophy that focuses more on us, rather than things too far removed from our immediate lives. Even in the Church, it's easy to approach our spirituality with a "me first" mentality. In many ways, living as a follower of Christ is to live in complete opposition to society.
All of us, at some time in our lives, struggle with living as Christ, or living as the world. Sometimes the lure is overwhelming, we feel defeated and often we just give up. But allow me to challenge you this week to focus on the words of this passage of scripture as you prepare for your groups. Let the complete focus be on Christ, as you prepare, as you focus and as you facilitate your group. Forget your own preconceived notions of how the meeting will progress. Forget how things may have gone in your first meeting. Forget what you would like to see happen, and spend some time seeking what God wants to happen. Devote some time to prayer and just focus on His guidance.
Let your words, actions, or whatever you are doing with your group this week, be done in the name of Jesus Christ! Thank Him for this great opportunity you have to lead this group of people. And keep in mind that He is the one you are serving; not yourself, not Gateway, not even the individuals in your group. But the creator of the universe. The one who makes this all possible. And the one that will continue to guide you as you facilitate this new group of people.
Peace and Blessings!
Jake
